Vignettes : A Creative Way to Decorate & Tell Your Story

Happy weekend, friends! I'm really excited today because I have a guest writer on the blog... my mom, Brenda! To know her is to love her, and to visit her home is to be wrapped in a warm hug. What she has created is a home that welcomes all who enter with warmth, peace and a place to rest. She is sharing a part of her story with y'all and tips on how to use vignettes to bring your story & charm into your own home. I hope you enjoy what she has to share!

Many years ago, my life literally collided with a beautiful and talented woman, who was a recognizable soulmate and soon became a lifelong friend. Her home was a lovely reflection of her humanity and eternalness. It always beckoned me to come in, relax, and enjoy a respite. In my naivety, I began the endless task of recreating the same look in my home; attempts that at times left my heart wanting. Perhaps this rings true of you. Over the years, as I’ve embraced knowing myself, both beauty and beast, my home has become the dwelling that reflects my journey and shines light on the things, experiences, and people dearest to me. I now realize that was the reason my friend’s home called out to me; for it was merely an extension and embodiment of her. Just as the proverb says: A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver; so a treasure perfectly placed adds a delightful touch to the vignettes that bring beauty and heart to our living spaces.

And it’s really simple. Think of each tabletop, bookshelf, countertop, door, chair, wall, or corner as an artist’s pallet. Gather items that you love and try putting things together that please you. There are a few tips that will enhance your process.

- Consider a light source, either natural or lamp, candle, small light, chandelier

- Use odd numbers of items

- Place things on different levels by stacking with books, trays, wooden boxes, old drawers, and dishes to create contrast

- Think about textures and a touch of natural looking greenery

- Placement can be both linear and clustered

- Mirrors are helpful for causing a reflection that creates abundance

Most importantly, play and have fun exploring all the options. Do not compare your nest to others, but do allow other homes to inspire you. Before you realize it, others will be telling you how much they love being in your home. But most importantly, you will crave being in the space that you’ve created to tell the most important narrative ever: your story.

Happy Decorating!

Brenda
